Outbound spam filters, how do they work?

Our outbound spam filters are managed by rspamd. Most of the time people get filtered it is due to one of these reasons:

  1. Sending “test” emails. These are by definition not important, and they look spammy to spam-learning algorithms. Send real emails, not one-word tests.

  2. Sending potentially unsafe attachments. Try not to send docx, xlsx, sh, or similar attachments if you can avoid it. These are basically executable and have the potential to be highly exploited for malicious purposes. It’s no surprise that if you match the patterns of people with malicious intent, machine learning will catch it as a related pattern.

  3. Sending actual spam. Don’t. Your recipients won’t receive it, and it will be a waste of your time.
