IMAP works but SMTP in email client fails

Hi,

I set up two domains and webmail is working. I now tried setting up my local email client via IMAP and SMTP for domain mobanisto.de. When sending an email I get this error:

SMTP< 550 R1: HELO should be a FQDN or address literal (See RFC 2821 4.1.1.1)

I also see in the logs that my software is sending my machine’s hostname:

ESMTP> EHLO mars

Trying to fix the issue myself I tried to configure a domain name in the advanced settings of my email software to mars.mobanisto.de, however then the SMTP server rejects to send mail due to SPF. That kind of makes sense to me because my local machine’s IP address is not one that would be listed as a legitimate sending address.

I’m not sure if I should be configuring something in DirectAdmin or there’s something wrong I wouldn’t be able to fix myself.

Thanks!
Sebastian

It sounds like our server is seeing your connection as one that is intended to deliver mail to our server, rather than send mail through it. This should suggest that your email client is not performing SMTP authentication. There should be a setting for that somewhere.

Thanks, that was it, indeed.
